History of AllOne Foundation & Charities

A decade ago, a unique philanthropic vision took shape in northeastern and north central Pennsylvania. In 2014, Highmark Inc., a Pittsburgh-based healthcare insurer, acquired Blue Cross of Northeastern Pennsylvania (BCNEPA), which had served the region for nearly a century. In healthcare conversions like this, it is common practice to establish a private foundation from a portion of the sale’s proceeds to reinvest in the local community. However, BCNEPA’s leadership – recognized for their strategic foresight and deep commitment to the region – chose to take this opportunity a step further, creating a groundbreaking model in philanthropy.

A Unique Model of Philanthropy

Rather than forming a traditional private foundation alone, these community-minded leaders structured a three-part entity: AllOne Foundation, AllOne Charities, and AllOne Health. This structure not only allowed for grantmaking but also ensured long-term sustainability through a for-profit enterprise.

AllOne Foundation

A private foundation, serves as the principal grantmaking entity, strategically investing in high-impact initiatives that address some of the region’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

AllOne Charities

A public nonprofit, allows for additional fundraising and broader community engagement, distributing grants to support grassroots health and human service programs.

AllOne Health

A for-profit employee assistance company, provides behavioral health and wellness services nationwide. Its profits are reinvested into AllOne Charities, creating a sustainable revenue stream for continued philanthropic work.

This innovative approach has enabled AllOne Foundation & Charities to make a substantial and lasting impact. Since 2016, when grantmaking formally began, the organization has distributed over $46.5 million in funding across 1,153 grants, benefiting 404 nonprofit organizations in all corners of its 13-county service region.

A Visionary Founder

At the heart of this initiative was John P. Moses, Esq., the founding chairman, whose vision and leadership were instrumental in establishing this model. A native of Wilkes-Barre and a longtime chairman and CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Moses brought a wealth of nonprofit management experience and a fearless commitment to philanthropy that shaped AllOne’s mission.
